How Does a Robot Mower Work?
A robot mower is ideal. It ensures that you no longer have to mow the grass yourself. Sounds great! A mowing robot takes care of the mowing for you. You can easily assign tasks and set up programs for the robot. Want to know how a robot mower works? Keep reading!
A robot mower operates in a very simple way. Using a program and perimeter wire, you determine the route your robotic lawnmower will take. The mowing robot then automatically starts mowing and returns to the charging station when the battery is almost empty. The result is a perfectly maintained lawn without any physical effort.
But that’s not all. Robot mowers are also very environmentally friendly because they run on a battery instead of gasoline. They are also very quiet and do not cause noise or air pollution. Moreover, they are safe for children and pets, as they are equipped with sensors that stop the device if an obstacle is detected.
A robotic lawnmower uses a boundary wire that is placed around the lawn in a loop and connected to the charging station. The boundary wire is easy to install and ensures that the robot mower trims the edges of the lawn first before mowing the area within the boundary wire. The mowing robot then returns to the charging station to recharge for the next cycle.
How Does a Robot Mower Navigate?
The robot mower independently mows your lawn. Our robot mowers work using a boundary wire. The robot mower knows where it can go through the boundary wire by receiving signals, keeping it within the set lines. The mower also has a collision sensor that detects and avoids objects. Our robot mower Hans is equipped with ultrasonic obstacle detection, allowing it to detect obstacles from a distance and avoid them, making it even more efficient. There are several other sensors that make our robot mowers unique. A robot mower will return over the boundary wire to the charging station when it runs out of battery. This is ideal because the robot then recharges and is ready for the next mowing session.
How to Define Your Lawn Area?
Start at the charging station and lay the boundary wire around the edge of your property. Check the manual and the included ruler to determine the correct distance from the edge of your lawn. Also, mark off obstacles. Think of objects that do not protrude above the mowing surface and that the robot cannot navigate around on its own. Secure the boundary wire with the appropriate boundary wire pegs. Follow the steps in the manual to ensure the boundary wire is installed correctly. On our page Installing a Robot Mower, you can find more information on setting up the boundary wire.
How to Install the Robot Mower?
Before the robot mower can get to work, it must first be charged at the charging station. Once that is done, you can proceed with the installation. This task may take some time, but once the installation is complete, you will have almost no maintenance to worry about. On our page Installing a Robot Mower, we go into more detail about the installation process.
How to Program the Robot Mower?
Now that the setup is complete, the only thing left to do is program the robot mower. It is usually best to place the fully charged robot mower in the charging station, then set up the mowing schedule. This can be done via the App (Katrien and Hans) or on the display. Using the corresponding App or the display, you can set up a mowing schedule and more! Do you have different zones? You can set starting points where the robot mower should enter the field. Hans creates an intelligent map of the lawn. This allows him to identify specific zones and set starting points for targeted mowing sessions. With Teun and Katrien, you can specify how many meters the robot should travel before entering the field.

The First Run of Your New Robot Mower
A good start is half the battle, which is why we have created this handy step-by-step guide to ensure you set it up correctly and use it properly. A robot mower takes care of the mowing for you; you only need to set your preferences in the app. However, there are a few things to keep in mind during installation and maintenance. That’s why we created this guide, and for more detailed information, you can always refer to the manual that comes with the robot mower.
Step 1: Preparing the Lawn.
- Remove obstacles such as toys, branches, and stones from the lawn. These can hinder the robot mower during its round, causing it to skip that section.
- If necessary, install the perimeter wire according to the manual so the mower knows where to work.
Step 2: Installing and Charging the Robot Mower.
- Place the charging station on a flat surface, close to a power outlet, and ensure there is free space around it. It doesn’t have to be exactly like in the picture; placing it under a shelter or on a terrace is also a good idea.
- Connect the charging station and place the robot mower in it to fully charge. After a mowing session, it will automatically recharge itself and return to the charging station.
Step 3: Setting Up the Zoef Robot Smart App.
- Download the Zoef Robot Smart App from the App Store or Google Play Store on your phone.
- Connect the robot in the app via Bluetooth or WiFi. For instructions, refer to the manual or app. In the app, you can set mowing schedules so that, for example, every Saturday at 10 AM, it automatically starts mowing the lawn, even if no one is home.
Step 4: Manual Settings via the Display.
- Use the display on the robot mower to configure basic settings such as mowing frequency or work mode if you are not using the app.
- If a mowing schedule is set, the robot can automatically start mowing at the programmed time.
- Check that the time and date are set correctly.
Step 5: Start the First Mowing Session.
- Let the robot mower start working according to the entered settings.
- Observe the first mowing session briefly to ensure everything is running smoothly.
Step 6: Maintenance and Inspection.
- Regularly check the blades for wear and clean the robot mower from time to time (remove grass residues and dirt).
- Keep the perimeter wire and charging station clean and free of obstacles.
Your Zoef Robot robot mower is now fully operational and ready to keep your lawn in top shape!
