What is a robot mower and how does it work?
A robotic lawnmower is an autonomous device that mows your lawn without you having to do anything. It works in a similar way to a traditional lawnmower, but instead of you pushing or pulling the mower, the robot does everything completely independently. This makes it one of the handiest garden tools available, especially for people with busy schedules or limited mobility.
The operation of a robotic lawnmower is quite simple. Once set up and configured, the mower can start automatically mowing the grass according to the schedule you have set. Most models are equipped with sensors, which ensure that the robot is able to detect obstacles and maneuver safely around them.
Another feature of robotic lawnmowers is that they use a boundary wire. This wire is laid around your lawn and acts as a virtual boundary that the robot will not cross. This ensures that your robotic lawnmower always mows exactly the area you want, without accidentally touching the driveway, flowerbeds, or other unwanted areas.
The technology of robotic lawnmowers has developed rapidly in recent years. They have become smarter, more efficient, quieter, and more user-friendly. Thanks to advanced sensors and GPS systems, most robotic lawnmowers can now find their own way, even in more complex gardens.
How Does a Robotic Lawnmower Work?
Most robotic lawnmowers work using a perimeter wire placed along the edges of your lawn. This wire is essential for the mower's navigation. When the robot detects the wire, it knows it should not go any further. Instead of moving the wire itself, the robot follows the wire and mows the grass within the wire's boundaries.
Robotic lawnmowers usually run on a rechargeable battery. They can autonomously return to their charging station when the battery is low, recharge, and then continue mowing. This means you don't have to worry about battery life, as the mower manages charging itself.
What Are the Main Features of Robotic Lawnmowers?
Robotic lawnmowers have several features that distinguish them from traditional lawnmowers.
Here are some of the most important:
Autonomous operation: The robotic lawnmower does the work completely independently. You don't have to push or pull it.
Boundary wire: This wire ensures that the robot does not go beyond the boundaries of your lawn.
Charging station: When the battery is low, the robot returns to the charging station to recharge.
Automatic navigation: Robotic lawnmowers can detect and navigate around obstacles, making them safe for use in gardens with various objects.
Adjustable mowing schedules: Most models offer the option to set a mowing schedule via a smartphone app or the control panel on the robot itself.
What are the advantages of a robotic lawnmower?
1. Time-saving
One of the biggest advantages of robotic lawnmowers is the enormous time saving. Traditional mowing requires you to set aside time in your busy schedule to mow the lawn. This can be a time-consuming chore, especially if you have a large lawn. With a robotic lawnmower, you no longer have to worry about it. The robot does the work for you while you do other things, whether it's work, household chores, or time for yourself.
2. Consistent and Stylish Result
Robotic lawnmowers are designed to mow the grass regularly. Unlike traditional mowers, which you might only use once a week, robotic lawnmowers mow daily or on a schedule you set. This ensures your lawn always looks well-maintained. In addition, robotic lawnmowers help keep the grass at a consistent length, which benefits the health of your lawn. Regular mowing prevents the grass from getting too long, which can lead to weed growth and uneven lawns.
3. Environmental Friendliness
Robotic lawnmowers run on batteries, making them much more environmentally friendly than traditional gasoline-powered lawnmowers. A robotic lawnmower does not emit harmful gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), and thus contributes to a cleaner environment. This is an important advantage, especially for people who want to reduce their ecological footprint. In addition, robotic lawnmowers are often much quieter than traditional lawnmowers, which means you can use them at any time without disturbing others. This makes them perfect for urban areas or residential neighborhoods where noise pollution can be a problem.
4. Safety
Safety is another reason why robotic lawnmowers are becoming increasingly popular. They are designed with various safety features, such as bump and lift sensors, which ensure the mower stops when it is lifted or comes into contact with an obstacle. This makes them ideal for families with young children or pets. The blades are also often well-shielded, so there is no risk of injury.
5. Ease of Maintenance
Robotic lawnmowers are relatively low-maintenance. Most models have a long lifespan and require little maintenance. All you have to do is occasionally clean or replace the mower's blades, charge the battery, and set up the perimeter wire. This makes them particularly convenient for people who don't want to spend a lot of time maintaining their lawnmower.

How does a robot lawnmower navigate?
A robotic lawnmower independently mows your lawn within a defined area, indicated by a boundary wire. This wire emits signals, so the robot knows where it is allowed to go.
At the start, the robotic lawnmower will first mow the edges by driving over the boundary wire. As soon as it returns to the charging station, it will go into the field to continue mowing. When it is finished or the battery runs low, the robot automatically drives back to the charging station via the boundary wire. This way, it is always ready for the next mowing session.
How do I set the mowing schedule?
Teun: Use the display on the mower itself to set the mowing schedule. You can program different times for the mower to start, so it mows the grass even when you're not home.
Katrien and Hans: Use the accompanying app to set the mowing schedule. Through the app, you can easily program times for the mower to start, so it mows the grass even when you're not home. You can also choose whether the edges should be included and set different schedules for each day. Exactly as you want it. If you prefer to set it on the mower, you can, but you'll have fewer options.
Is my lawn suitable for a robot mower?
A suitable lawn for a robotic lawnmower meets the following criteria:
- The lawn is not larger than the maximum range of the chosen model.
- There are no large obstacles such as trees or garden furniture that could hinder the mower.
- The slope of the lawn is within the recommended limits for the chosen model.
- It is possible to lay an uninterrupted boundary wire around the field.
Can the robotic lawnmower be operated with an app?
Katrien and Hans: Yes, both models can be operated via the Zoef Robot Smart app.
Teun: No, Teun does not have app control.
Can the robotic lawnmower work in the rain?
Yes, this is possible. All models have a rain sensor which can be switched off.
However, we advise against it. It is bad for the grass and the mower. A wet surface is more vulnerable and it is much harder for the robotic lawnmower. If this happens often, it will negatively affect its lifespan. If the rain sensor is switched on, the mower will automatically return to its charging station as soon as it rains. In case of drizzle, the robot may continue mowing.
How do I install the boundary wire?
Step-by-step:
Plan and sketch your lawn
Draw the work area, including obstacles such as flowerbeds or trees you want to exclude.
Place the charging station smartly
Place the station on a flat surface, not in a corner, not in a lower area, and preferably away from tall trees.
Lay the boundary wire neatly in one loop
– Start at the station and lay the wire loosely along the edges of your lawn.
– Ensure a distance from the edge of 10–30 cm depending on the surface (10 cm for even paving, 20 cm for hard surfaces, 30 cm for soft edges like borders).
– Use the supplied distance gauge: pegs approximately 80 cm apart.
Connect "islands" around obstacles
For example, encircle a flowerbed so that the mower avoids this area. Ensure that there is at least 5 mm space between the incoming and outgoing wire.
Ensure ample corners and slope rules
– Corners: at least 100° to avoid sharp turning angles.
– Slopes: for steep slopes up to 30% (20°), a minimum distance to the edge is recommended. For slopes above 25°, keep at least 40 cm space all around.
Correctly connect to the charging station
– Strip the ends of the cable (~10 mm).
– Connect the wire that runs under the station to the red (IN) connection.
– Connect the other side to the black (OUT) connection.
Leave straight cable in front of the station
Leave at least 1 meter of straight, obstacle-free cable in front of the charging station so that the robot can drive in properly.
Test the installation
– Connect the power supply; the LED light should be solid green when correctly connected.
– Place the robot within the loop: it should be able to leave the station and return via the boundary wire.
Can I set up multiple zones for my robot mower?
Yes, all three models support multiple zones:
Teun: You can set two starting points on the display: at the charging station (0%) and halfway along the boundary wire (50%) — useful if you have a second zone.
Katrien: Via the app, you can specify where on the cable the robot enters the field, after how many meters, and what percentage of the mowing time it should stay there. The passage between zones must be at least 0.8 m wide.
Hans: It recognizes different zones via a smart map and automatically creates starting points. Here too, passages must be at least 0.8 m wide.
Furthermore, for all models:
The zones must be connected via a single loop; there must be at least 50 cm of space between the boundary wires, plus 30 cm on both sides.
How long does it take for the robot mower to be fully charged?
Charging time varies by model but is usually between 1.5 and 2.5 hours.
After a full charge, the mower can typically mow for 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the model and conditions.
Maintenance of your Robotic Lawnmower
Robotic lawnmowers are easy to maintain. Here are some tips to ensure your robotic lawnmower continues to function optimally:
1. Clean the Blades and the Mower
After each mowing session, it is important to clean the blades. Grass residue can accumulate and reduce the mower's performance. Clean the blades regularly to maintain optimal results.
2. Check the Battery
Ensure that your robotic lawnmower's battery is well-maintained. Most robotic lawnmowers have a long lifespan, but it is important to regularly charge the battery and check that it is working properly.
3. Replace the Blades
Over time, your robotic lawnmower's blades can become dull. It is important to replace the blades periodically to maintain your mower's efficiency.
What should I do if the robot lawnmower gets stuck?
- Check that the underside of the robot is clean and not jammed by anything on the grass.
- Check if there is an error message on the app or display. Then check the manual for the best action to take.
- Check if the robot is charged.
Place the robot back on the charging station. If it is charging, enter the PIN code and start the robot.
If the error returns, check the manual and the help center page for the best solution.
