What is a Dust Mite?
The dust mite is a small, spider-like creature that lives in our house dust. They are white creatures that are barely visible due to their small size. This mite mainly feeds on skin flakes from humans and animals, but pollen, fibers and hairs are also popular food sources. The dust mite mainly lives in a humid, dark, warm environment such as mattresses, pillows, duvets and cuddly toys.
What is a dust mite allergy?
About 5 to 10 percent of people develop an allergy to dust mites. In most cases, it is not the mite itself, but an allergen in the mite's droppings that causes the allergic reaction. More than 40 percent of this group also develops asthma symptoms.
Beds are a breeding ground for dust mites and other allergy-causing bacteria and micro-organisms. The allergic reactions are therefore often more severe at night than during the day. A dust mite allergy manifests itself in the following symptoms, among others:
- Sneezing fits
- Blocked nose
- Watery and itchy eyes
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Poor sleep
- Eczema
